Willoughby City Council's Children's Services Staff Development Day July 2008

Sharing his skills with childcare workers in the art and science of NLP is one of Simon's greatest pleasures. Read what Simon got up to when he was asked to introduce NLP to a group of childcare workers on Sydney's North Shore.

When I was asked to do a 3 hour workshop on NLP at the Willoughby Council’s Childcare Staff Development Day, I was honoured and delighted to do so.
The day was organised and coordinated by Treena Allen and her team to focus on the individual development of childcare workers within the Willoughby district. So often we offer training in child welfare and development and overlook the personal needs of the carers themselves.
To start the workshop I decided that I would introduce them to NLP by sharing how we humans process the information that bombards us every second and how we make sense of it all internally – inside our mind. The NLP Communication Model was the perfect way to do this and everyone seemed to understand it very easily (something in the past you would have had to have gone to university for 4 years to understand!).
From there I introduced them to the ‘Cause and Effect’ statement (C>E) which afterwards a number of people mentioned to me as being very powerful in allowing them to understand why they were getting the results they were getting.
After that I demonstrated how by making small changes to the pictures inside our minds, we can decrease and then increase again ones own motivation - proving that we are in charge of our thinking and therefore our behaviours and results!
Then it was time to put NLP to the test. We had a volunteer for the audience come up to the front and change the way she related to a food she liked divulging in – peanuts! After the workshop, she came up to me and said that she still had the changes she made in her head and that even though peanuts gave her great a release from a stressful day (and that she really didn’t want to give them up totally – oh no!!!), that she felt more in control of her old behaviour. Well done! And thank you for playing.

After a quick break we were back into it again learning about communication. Communication skills are the basis of any type of success, whether it be in discovering what you are passionate about or in getting a child to do what you want them to do. As I have been told for many years “everything comes under the umbrella of rapport”, so we all did an exercise in rapport using only our physiology. Again we had two willing volunteers from the audience to help demonstrate that when we match and mirror other peoples physiology (breathing, posture, gestures and so on), we can really start to understand what they might be thinking! After all, physiology is 55% of our total communication with others. Everyone did the exercise extremely well and we had some very interesting learnings and awakenings from the whole experience.
All in all, the workshop was a wonderful success and it was a pleasure to meet many of the participants at lunch to hear their thoughts on what they experienced and learnt from the workshop.
Here are some the more popular issues people said they were most interested in:
- Improving communication skills: 50%
- Having more confidence: 50%
- Overcoming unwanted behaviours: 55%
- Letting go of negative emotions: 61%
- Improving health and fitness: 72%
Again I want to thank Treena Allen for organising the day and to Julie Larson for being such a wonderful liaison person.
It would be an absolute pleasure to offer my services to you all again. All the very best with your new awareness and rapport skills!
