Neuro Linguistic Programming helps students learn more efficiently says Simon Fishburn. (By Christine Paul)

Pymble-based Simon Fishburn believes in the importance of good communication as a valuable learning tool both for adults and children alike.
A certified NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) master practitioner and trainer, Mr Fishburn is passionate about helping people communicate more efficiently and effectively.
“I work with children and adults on a regular basis in one-on-one situations and I run NLP workshops and trainings every few months,” Mr Fishburn said.
“Children who come to see me with spelling problems very often feel bad about being branded a “bad speller”. They feel angry and frustrated with themselves, but they want to do the best they can,” he said.
“I believe they are doing the best that they can with the resources they have been given – a strategy that is producing unwanted results. So what I do is I give them a new strategy that gets them the results they want.”
Mr Fishburn says that he doesn’t work with kids week after week teaching them every word in the dictionary. “I see them for a few sessions and teach them how to spell so they can continue to learn by themselves,” he said.
“Firstly I find out how the child is currently trying to spell, then I discover how they prefer to learn, which finally helps me give them a new strategy that immediately produces results right there and then in one session.”
After one session, Mr Fishburn said that he saw children spelling words, which they would normally have difficulty with – both forwards and backwards.
“This of course amazes them, not to mention their parents, who have previously been struggling night after night to get their child to learn to spell.
“The wonderful thing is that it instantly boosts the child’s self-esteem and restores confidence in their ability to learn right across the board,” Mr Fishburn said.
“I love what I do. It’s so rewarding and life changing for these kids. It doesn’t take a lot to change the course of a child’s life and I’m blessed to have the opportunity to do so.”
