Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a natural occurring state that we experience everyday to some degree, without us even realising that we are in a trance like state.

Hypnosis has been around for a very long time. In fact, it is as old as human existence because it is a naturally occuring phenomenon.

It has been called different things over the years from monoideaism to mesmerism and evidence of it's healing properties can be traced back to ancient Sanskrit writings from India and papyrus scrolls from Ancient Egypt, thousands of years ago.

However it was not until 1958, when the American Medical Association officially recognised it, that Hypnosis became widely accepted as being a tool for change.

UNDERSTANDING HYPNOSIS

Have you ever been driving your car down a road somewhere on your own and without realising it, you had driven through two suburbs with no conscious recollection of doing it, like you were in another world? Or, have you experienced whilst watching the television someone asking you to do something, yet for some strange reason you were totally oblivious to them even being there?

These are normal and frequent occurrences that we experience everyday. This phenomenon in Hypnosis we call ‘trance’. There's the televisions trance, the driving trance, the good book trance, the boring teacher trance and so on. The difference between going into trance watching the television and a Hypnotherapy induced trance, is that a Hypnotherapist guides the client with a specific purpose to create positive change at the unconscious level.

Hypnosis is achieved by creating rapport with the client whilst giving them positive and powerful suggestions directly to their Unconscious Mind. Dr. Milton H. Erickson once said, “Patients are patients because they are out of rapport with their own Unconscious.”

MYTHS SUROUNDING HYPNOSIS

“All sciences alike have descended from magic and superstition, but none has been so slow as hypnosis in shaking off the evil association of its origins.”
(Clark Hull)

The English physician James Braid (1795-1860), who was studying the work of Franz Anton Mesmer (who gave birth to Mesmerism during 1760-1842), introduced the term ‘hypnosis’ which is derived from the Greek word hypnos which means ‘sleep’. Unfortunately by the time Braid had realised that technically trance is not sleep (trying to change Hypnosis to Neurypnology), the name hypnosis had already gained strong popularity and has stuck ever since.

Contrary to popular beliefs, a client under hypnosis has total control and would not do anything he or she would not normally do in a totally wakened state. Dr. Tad James, MS, PhD, says in his book ‘Hypnosis - A Comprehensive Guide’, “People who are in rapport with their Unconscious Minds are also in control of their destiny.”
