The Premise Behind Time Line Therapy™



The process of letting go of negative emotions (or negative emotional associations) on past events is one that we do quite naturally as human beings. It is the natural ability our unconscious and conscious minds have (working together), to be able to resolve problematic and even traumatic experiences from our past.


This reminds me of a story...

I remember a man telling me a story about an incident that happened when he was a young man learning how to drive. For the sake of this stroy, lets call him James.

It was a rainy night, and James hadn’t been on his learners permit for very long. He had just ventured out on the streets and found himself having to turn across traffic on a very steep hill. He recalls having to wait for a gap in the oncoming traffic, with his mother kindly and patiently giving helpful instructions (of some sort) from the passenger seat. All James really remembers vividly was stalling the car time after time, and creating a traffic jam for what seemed to be a mile behind him. 

Finally he managed (after many attempts), to get home he recalled, with his ego sulking somewhere in the boot of the car. "Boy was I mad!" he remembers. "I was so angry I took my L-plates off the car and threw them down on the ground in disgust, proclaiming never ever to drive again!" Well, of course that wasn’t to be the case as he was back in the drivers seat within a few days.

The point of this story is that now, everytime James thinks back on that incident, he remembers how angry he was at the time. He smiles and laughs at how angry he was, proclaims that he no longer feels anger today about that incident.

Can you think back to something like that in your past, maybe it was something you were sad about, like maybe when you lost your favourite toy at the age of 8, and now as you think back on that event, you no longer feel that sadness?

This is how we do the process of Time Line Therapy naturally. This is the way things are supposed to be. You have resolved that issue, or event in your past. The feeling of sadness was there, and now it is not.

So why do we let go of some negative emotions from the past easily and unconsciously, and not others?


WHY DO WE HANG ONTO UNPLEASANT EMOTIONS?     

Our unconscious mind holds onto these emotions not to punish or hurt us, but to help us. We believe that negative emotions such as anger, sadness, fear, hurt, guilt, anxiety (and all their sub-names: sadness - depressed, unhappy, feeling down, miserable, lonely… etc), are not necessarily bad. What we call ‘negative emotions’, are simply signals from your unconscious mind that that there is something to learn about ourselves, that we have not gotten yet. It's a chance to evolve and grow from our experienes. That's why we say "the past is informational". 

Unfortunately though for a lot of people, they choose to ignore these signals and pretend that they aren’t really there.

Have you ever known someone to be “dealing” with their anger or “coping” with their sadness? Ignoring these signals and pushing them out of our minds can result in a gradual disconnection to our spirit, arising health issues to plague us, lack of emotional control, relationship breakdowns and so on.

This is where Time Line Therapy™ comes in. Sometimes we need a little guidance to unlock the wonderful gifts from our past, so we can reconnect with ourselves, grow, develop and evolve as nature intends us to do.
