BEHIND EVERY BEHAVIOUR LIES A POSITIVE INTENTION At Awaken Awareness, we believe that no matter what behaviour you are currently experiencing and wanting to get rid of, at some point in the past, it stemmed from a positive intention or positive need to be fulfilled. Somewhere along the way, it was never met for your child as he or she intended it to be and may now be manifesting in an undesirable way in the form of disruptive, inappropriate or compulsive behaviours.
Issues such as: ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), Bullying / teasing, talking back, stealing, self-sabotage (overeating, physical self harm), aggression, anger (bad tempers), social withdrawal and loneliness … may stem from a positive need not being met at an unconscious level.

Anthony Robbins (a well known advocate of NLP technology), talks about there being really only six human needs.
They are the need for:
- Certainty Variety (uncertainty)
- Significance
- Love and Connection
- Growth
- Contribution
We need these needs to be fulfilled, so we go about fulfilling them however we can, and we do it mostly unconsciously (without conscious volition).
So when a 7 year old boy is asked why he keeps stealing and replies “I don’t mean to do it, I know it’s wrong to steal but I can’t help it,” I always ask myself: “What’s the intention behind this behaviour?” and “what need is this child endeavouring to fulfil?”

SO HOW CAN NLP HELP CHILDREN OVERCOME SUCH ISSUES? |
Communication is the key – the foundation to which everything else stems. Communication with self and others. When we as adults do not feel we are being understood, we can feel a myriad of negative emotions from anger and frustration to sadness and helplessness. Imagine for a moment a child not being able to communicate how they feel with those around them and feeling misunderstood?
In our childhood and teenage years this is where we form our beliefs and values – the foundation for our future behaviours (and results) and it is important that we feel we are connected to those around us. The need for Love/Connection and Significance is extremely important to children, even if they don’t outwardly show it in some cases.

SOME THINGS THAT NLP CAN OFFER: |
Communication Skills: Understanding what Communication Style your child favours (Visual, Auditory or Kinesthetic) and also what Communication Style you favour. Unconscious miscommunication has a huge impact on relationships. Knowing your child’s favoured style will allow you to unconsciously connect with them and achieve great results.
According to Dr. Robert Birdwhistle, the words we use in communicating makes up only 7% of communication. The other 93% is our non-verbal language. Read more…
Resolving The Past: Allowing children and teenagers to let go of negative emotional associations to past events. Some children can have traumatic experiences remain unresolved. Some examples can be: the death of a family pet, bad dreams, getting lost in a crowd when young and so on. These can easily be resolved using guided visualisation techniques and metaphors - the power of story telling!
Making Sense of Our World: Re-encoding the way we give meaning (internally) to our external experiences. Instead of trying to "get rid of" or run away from thoughts and behviours that we deem as bad or evil, sometimes an understanding of how that thought or behaviour could simply be misplaced and actually quite appropriate in another context can easily resolve the biggest of problems.
Creating A Bright Future: Often troublesome behaviours and thought patterns can be the result of a lack of direction and purpose in life. Tomorrow's a new day, and the past does not have to equal the future.
At Awaken Awareness, our approach is wholistic in nature (mind-body-spirit), and thus a thorough awareness of good nutrition and exercise is always addressed.
