FAQ: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

"Why is NLP taught in the form of a Practitioner and Master Practitioner training?" Firstly let me tell you a little bit about each of the trainings for those that are not sure. The body of knowledge that is NLP is taught in two stages. The NLP Practitioner level deals with one half of the body of knowledge and the Master Practitioner level deals with the other half. The Practitioner training gives you the basic foundations of NLP – learning to recognise patterns and to demonstrate your understanding of the techniques.
If you are seriously dedicated to mastering these techniques, it is highly recommended that you attend the Master Practitioner training where we go further down the rabbit hole, and learn advanced patterns as well as strengthening the basics you have already learnt at the practitioner level.
The reason it’s taught like this is to keep the standards of the NLP Practitioner at a consistently high level world wide. Whether you want to use the skills just for you own personal growth and evolution, or you’re a psychologist wanting to add these skills to your tool kit for helping others, the standards are the same. The founders of NLP created these certification standards to allow parents, uni students, managers, CEO’s, doctors, health professionals, teachers and salespeople to all benefit from the wonders of NLP.

"I really want to learn NLP so I can be a better parent for my children, but I don’t necessarily want to become a “practitioner” and see clients in therapy sessions. Why do I have to become a practitioner to help my children? Is there other ways of learning the skills of NLP without attending the practitioner and master practitioner trainings?" |
I hear this quite a lot, so to answer the 1st part of your question, let me say this. What a lot of people forget is that we all influence others to some extent every day. Even a beggar on the street is a teacher to us all. Whether you are a doctor or a parent, a teacher or a nurse, these skills are priceless when it comes to raising children. They are priceless in a business scenario or in sales too. There are a lot of people that become NLP practitioners and don’t use them in therapy. Some come to gain the know how to change their own life, others to run their own business. However you choose to use the skills acquired is totally up to you.
To answer the second part of your question, you can read books and listen to audio presentations on the subject to get a basic understanding of NLP. This has merit and I highly recommend it, and attending a practitioner training you not only learn the skills with a certified trainer present, you get to experience each pattern hands-on, doing exercises with other participants. It’s like learning to drive a car. You can read all you want about how to do it and see someone else do it, but nothing beats the hands-on experience of sitting in the drivers seat and literally doing it yourself.
You can also come and attend the 2 ½ day workshop ‘Awaken Your Potential’ where you will experience NLP, Time Line Therapy™ and Hypnosis with yourself. This workshop is designed to allow you to personally transform you own life. As powerful as it is, this 2 ½ day workshop doesn’t equip you with the ‘know how’ in helping other people. The Practitioner training does. It gives you the ‘how to’ in helping others you care about, like your children, your staff or work colleagues.
Communication skills are commonly shared by parents and CEO’s alike. You will find that it does not matter in what context you use these skills, the tools and techniques you learn and experience at the NLP Practitioner training can be adapted to suit almost any situation or area of your life. This is the beauty of NLP! Plus, how cool would it be to have lunch with your friends and tell them that you are now a certified practitioner of NLP? Let me tell you, it makes for an interesting dinner party conversation, and you may even help someone along the way with your renewed perspective on life!

"How can you become a ‘practitioner’ of NLP in just 8 days?" |
Well, to put it simply, you can’t. To become certified at the Practitioner level of NLP through the American Board of NLP (the criteria and standards to which I base my trainings), the minimum amount of hours is 120 hours. This is why we have you do pre and post-study with the Pre-study Pack, which includes 20 cd’s (which you are required to listen to before and after the training), 2 books to read and the completion of the test. This plus the training itself (your demonstration of the skills), all adds up to fulfil the requirements stipulated by the American Board of NLP (which is also recognised by the Australian Board of NLP).

"Why is it called the NLP Practitioner Intensive?" We call it the ‘NLP Practitioner Intensive’ because it really is 8 consecutive days (plus pre and post-study), where you will be focusing on NLP, Time Line Therapy™ and Hypnosis. In the old days, NLP practitioner material would have been learnt over a period of 26 - 30 days (and longer depending on the trainer). Our belief in NLP is that when you learn the skills of NLP, you literally accelerate your life. What may have taken you 10 years to overcome in the past, now only takes you 10 hours. The learning curve literally spikes and skyrockets! Remember that 100 years ago it used to take months to travel from England to Sydney, now only takes a day. So my training carries the same premise. What used to take years to learn, can now be accelerated.

"I’ve experienced NLP in a business training I attended for work. Can I apply these techniques in my personal life and with my children?" Absolutely! Just as your trainer most probably told you you can. As I have answered in a previous question, it does not matter in which context you apply these skills, the underlying concepts and patterns are the same. I always ask “how’s it going applying the skills you’ve learnt in business in other areas of your life?” The training you attended was probably designed around communication, sales and management skills. The question is: “how aware are you that you had better be a better sales person to your children than the guy selling drugs down on the local street corner?” We are all salespeople.

"I want to learn NLP, but don’t necessarily want to learn hypnosis. Can I do that? And isn’t hypnosis just power over other people anyway?" |
Sure! It’s possible. There probably are places where you can learn just NLP on it’s own, but in my opinion, when you learn NLP, you are learning hypnosis, because a lot of the NLP skills you will learn stem from Ericksonian Hypnosis. Ahh! There’s no escaping it! The beauty of my trainings is that you will learn NLP and Hypnosis together, and then we look at Time Line Therapy™ and Hypnosis separately to further your understanding of the mind and ‘change techniques’ in order to expand your tool kit to be able to help yourself and others achieve their goals.
And to answer the second part of your question about hypnosis being power over other people – you have to attend this training to unveil the truth about hypnosis! Hypnosis is not about power over other people! There is nothing that I can (or anyone else for that matter), do to you that you don’t want me to do. It’s as simple as that.

"How long do the classes run for each day of the practitioner training?" Each day usually goes for about 7 hours, with a 15 minute break every 1 ½ hours and a 1 hour lunch break. Each topic is broken down into learning the theory behind each technique and then breaking off into groups to do the exercise.

"What if you can’t get the time off work to attend the trainings or have a young child to raise?" Good question. You know, where there is a will, there’s a way, right, so if you really, really, really want to attend the practitioner training, then you will find a way. Have there been times in your past when for example, you didn’t have the money for the next rent payment, but somehow, you found the money? When you really want something, you will find a way.
I remember when I was going through my practitioner training there was a man that prior to training, didn’t think he could get the time off work. After speaking to his boss about it, the company he worked for not only gave him the time off work, they actually paid for him to do the training!!! He was able to get them to see how the skills he would learn would benefit the company as well!
There was also a woman who had only just given birth to a baby boy a few weeks before, and she found a way to attend the training too! Sometimes she would have to bring the child in to the training room and have a coaching assistant mind him when she had to do the exercises. Where there’s a will… there’s a way.
